Gravatai Housing / Porto Alegre / Brazil / 2016

Client // Self-Sustaining Urban Development Fund • Location // Porto Alegre, Brazil • Program // Housing • Status // Proposal / 2016 • Area // 26,000m2 • Team // Clayton Strange (with Somatic Collaborative)

By taking advantage of the site’s topography, Gravatai Housing proposes a new low-rise, high-density housing alternative for the periphery of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Establishing a mixed-use program of living and co-working spaces, the project is organized in a series of three trays, each with its own unique mix of gardens, parking, hardscapes, and collaborative zones. Housing blocks are defined through the sandwiching of central open spaces for circulation and an armature for a series of unit types for a diverse set of demographics. The project goes beyond typical notions of monofunctional, low-income housing in the area to define a rich zone of social engagement outside of the single-family dwelling.
