Perched House

Location // Kassel, Germany • Program // Residential • Status // Proposal / 2017 • Area // 240m2 • Team // Clayton Strange (with Somatic Collaborative)

Perched House interrogates key questions for contemporary domestic life: how will binaries such as public/private, live/work, and interior/exterior evolve in the 21st century? Part of the Ways of Life project, Perched House is one of 20 experimental prototypes for new live/work lifestyles in an era of hypermobility.

The project brings nature into the domestic setting through a double-skin glass air buffer which also functions as a 21st century winter garden. By establishing a gradient between notions of nature and enclosure, work and leisure, transparency and opacity, and transformations in step with seasonal variations in climate, Perched House provides a vision of contemporary life and the natural world.
